AI, Talent, and Change: What Stood Out at NASCES 2024

I recently attended this year’s NASCES 2024 conference, and one topic was at the forefront of nearly every conversation: artificial intelligence (AI). It is clear just how much AI is shaping the supply chain sector. Still, there was also a strong emphasis on balancing this innovation with the human element—especially when attracting and retaining top talent.

Striking the Balance: AI’s Disruption of Jobs and the Need for Skilled Talent

One of the key themes discussed at NASCES was the growing reliance on AI, particularly the significant investments in data centers and energy sources needed to support AI-related tasks. As AI gets woven into more and more supply chain processes, it’s starting to replace many lower-level or entry-level jobs, automating tasks that used to be done manually.

AI eliminates certain roles, yet the supply chain industry still faces the challenge of attracting and retaining top-tier talent. It’s a bit of a paradox, and leaders are very aware of the tension between job reduction and the urgent need to make supply chain careers as appealing as those in other high-growth industries.

The intentional cutbacks lead to an opportunity for stronger, healthier growth in other areas—creating space for high-caliber talent to thrive and innovate. But the question remains—how do we attract them?

Inspiring Next-Gen Talent: Building Excitement Around Supply Chain Innovation

Many conversations I had at NASCES reinforced how important it is to give young, talented professionals a compelling reason to choose supply chain careers over other paths. In an era where AI and other tech roles often seem like the most exciting options, we in the supply chain sector must build a strong, appealing narrative. This means showing how dynamic the industry can be, with plenty of room for innovation and real, global impact.

For Zinata, this is a clear takeaway: We must position ourselves not just as supply chain leaders but also as a place where people can build exciting, fulfilling careers. Creating an environment where growth, learning, and innovation are encouraged will be key to attracting top talent, especially as AI continues to drive automation in the industry.

Leveraging Change to Drive Success: Zinata’s Expertise in Action

Beyond AI and talent retention, change management was another topic that kept coming up. Change is a constant across all industries, but managing it effectively is still a significant challenge. This is an area where I believe Zinata’s expertise really stands out. Many of the attendees I spoke with recognized the importance of not just adapting to change but using it as a tool to drive real success in their organizations.

With AI and other advanced technologies transforming businesses, Zinata’s ability to teach and advise on effective change management is a critical asset. As companies continue integrating these technologies, the need for structured and practical ways to manage change will only grow.

The Road Ahead

NASCES 2024 offered a deep dive into the challenges and opportunities shaping today’s supply chain industry. While AI is driving tremendous advances in automation, it’s also forcing us to rethink how we attract and retain talent. At the same time, change management is becoming even more crucial as businesses navigate the complexities of this AI-driven transformation.

For us at Zinata, the path forward is transparent. We must stay at the forefront of change management practices while positioning supply chain roles as dynamic, innovative, and rewarding careers. By balancing AI innovation with human talent, I’m confident we can help ensure the supply chain industry thrives well into the future.
